UK small satellite launch vehicles, Skyrora XL and Skylark L

About Skyrora

Skyrora Limited is a UK launch vehicle company based at 7 Drum Mains Park, Cumbernauld, Glasgow, that designs, manufactures and deploys rockets for the small satellite market, drawing inspiration from the British Black Arrow programme. Its stated aim is to become the first company in the UK to build and launch a rocket into space and the main commercial provider of access to space from British soil, following an incremental step-by-step approach that combines proven technology with additive manufacturing. Skyrora became the first homegrown UK company to receive a launch operator licence from the Civil Aviation Authority and has a partnership with the SaxaVord spaceport in Shetland. It has also opened what it describes as the UK's largest rocket engine testing facility and leads an ESA project on 3D printing the rocket material Tanbium.

Vehicles

  • Skyrora XL: a three-stage, light class orbital launch vehicle to place payloads into Sun-synchronous orbit between 500 km and 1,000 km, or polar orbit, with nine Skyforce engines on the first stage, one on the second stage, and a third stage using a re-ignitable 3.5 kN LEO engine burning hydrogen peroxide and kerosene; the payload fairing is a composite honeycomb shell
  • Skyforce: a seven-tonne engine for the first and second stages using turbopump techniques and producing 70 kN of thrust
  • Skylark L: a guided, single-stage suborbital vehicle 11 m tall that can carry 50 kg beyond the Karman line on a 30 kN bipropellant engine with 3D-printed parts; its 2022 launch campaign from Iceland did not achieve full mission success but provided flight data for the XL programme
  • Skylark Micro, a two-stage supersonic rocket on solid motors, and Skylark Nano, a single-stage unguided rocket for launch simulation
  • A space tug providing services to satellites in orbit

Launch infrastructure

Skyrora's launch site systems are modular, with no module larger than a standard 40 ft ISO container, allowing rapid set-up and pack-down and launch from interchangeable locations with or without spaceport infrastructure. The site includes a command centre, helium pressurisation, fuel and oxidiser filling systems, a mobile 160 kVA power station and a mobile launch complex that transports, erects and launches the vehicle. Customers get a dedicated launch with an encapsulated payload module and no co-passenger delays. The company has tested its Ecosene fuel, completed a second stage static fire and tested a telemetry relay system, and holds awards including the Armed Forces Covenant bronze award and a Green Apple environmental award.
