Scanway

Space cameras for Earth observation and vision quality control systems

About Scanway

Scanway S.A. is a Polish company based in Wroclaw that works on the optical data chain, from acquiring image data with hardware built from COTS and custom components to processing and analysing the images. Its team has more than nine years of experience in machine vision and splits its work between space cameras for satellite missions and vision systems for industrial quality control. The company states that everything can be measured with light, from the smallest production component to wide areas of the Earth's surface, and says its space and terrestrial competences complement each other.

Space cameras

  • Scanway Optical Payload (SOP): a camera series for Earth observation and remote sensing on micro and nanosatellites, with detectors across visible, near-infrared, shortwave infrared and multispectral bands and configurable ground sampling distance
  • Scanway Camera System: small camera systems built from COTS optics and interfaces for in-orbit operations, satellite self-inspection and decision support, modular enough to integrate with a range of onboard computers
  • HYDRA image data handling software, from single pixel to decision
  • Custom optical and mechanical design

Missions

Scanway's first in-orbit demonstration flew on a 6U CubeSat launched on SpaceX's Transporter-6 mission, validating Earth observation and self-inspection systems. A dual-camera system from Scanway documented fairing separation and payload deployment on the first flight of Ariane 6 as part of YPSat. Other listed projects include a high-resolution imaging telescope for the Intuitive Machines Lunar Data Network orbiter, the Korean K3M methane monitoring microsatellite, the Polish SZAFIR dual-use Earth observation constellation, the largest Polish Earth observation microsatellite, the DLR-led OTTER vessel verification mission launched with Isar Aerospace, an ESA Phase A lunar photometric mapping concept and a LIBS spectrometer for a European lunar water extraction study. In 2026 the company updated its strategy for 2026 to 2028 with the aim of offering very-high-resolution imaging combining sub-metre visible and near-infrared with high-resolution SWIR.

Vision systems

For manufacturing, Scanway offers four vision quality control systems: CUMULUS for on-line object inspection, STRATUS for raw material web inspection, NIMBUS for robot-integrated inspection and CIRRUS for large-area inspection, covering classification and segmentation tasks. The company has a mechanical and electronic workshop, an optoelectronic laboratory with a clean box and collimator, and headquarters in a business complex in Wroclaw.

Shows

Scanway appears in the exhibitor lists of the Small Satellite Conference 2027, SmallSat Europe 2027 and MSPO International Defence Industry Exhibition 2027.
