Luxembourg Space Agency
Luxembourg's national space agency, founded in 2018

About Luxembourg Space Agency
The Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA) was established by the Ministry of the Economy in 2018 to develop the national space sector. Based at 12C Impasse Drosbach in Luxembourg, it fosters new and existing companies, develops human resources, facilitates access to funding and supports academic research, implements the national space economic development strategy, manages national space research and development programmes and leads the SpaceResources.lu initiative. The agency also represents Luxembourg within the European Space Agency and in the space-related programmes of the European Union and the United Nations, acting as the central contact point for space matters in the Grand Duchy.
Luxembourg's space ecosystem
- Luxembourg entered the space industry in 1985 with the founding of SES on 25 March that year as a public-private partnership, which launched its first satellite, ASTRA 1A, in December 1988 and broke the European broadcasting monopoly
- Luxembourg later became ESA's 17th member state, gaining access to its research facilities, technology programmes and collaborative missions
- In 2017 Luxembourg became the first European country and the second in the world after the United States to adopt a law on the exploration and use of space resources, guaranteeing that private companies can own resources they extract from asteroids, the Moon or other celestial bodies
- Over the past decade the ecosystem has grown from 16 companies to a major hub, supported by government funding initiatives and a legal framework the agency describes as unique in Europe, and the website lists space ecosystem job offers and the steps to set up a business in Luxembourg
Recent activity
News on the agency's site includes a five-year extension of the memorandum of understanding with the Italian Space Agency signed by interim CEO Ruy Pinto and ASI special commissioner Mario Cospito at the International Astronautical Congress in Antalya on 9 October 2026, a multi-million euro LuxIMPULSE contract awarded with ESA to TerraSpark for a large-scale wireless power demonstration, ClearSpace's ESA contract for the next phase of its 100 million euro Phoenix mission to extend the life of geostationary satellites, Space Cargo Unlimited's agreement to conduct in-space manufacturing aboard SpaceX's Starfall re-entry vehicle, and a 65 million euro ESA contract for ispace-EUROPE's MAGPIE lunar rover.
