About Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association

The Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association, or LPBA, is an association that joins aviation and law. Its members are mostly practicing attorneys with a background in aviation. The site says that for members, law is the profession and aviation is the passion.

The group holds two conventions each year and publishes a quarterly journal. It says these help members talk, learn and build friendships around aviation safety, regulation and the joy of flight. The next event shown is the Nashville Conference, from February 17 to 21, 2027, at The Nash Hotel, 230 4th Avenue North, Nashville, Tennessee. The home page also has a call for airshow submissions and a member login.

The history page says that Alfred Rathblott, the first president, had the idea in 1959. Nine lawyer-pilots signed the articles of incorporation, and 21 flying lawyers attended the first meeting at Monticello, New York, on October 25, 1959. The group was first called the Legal Eagles Association. In 1965 it became the Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association, and its newsletter became the LPBA Journal.

Membership is open to more people today. Non-voting members include lawyers who are not pilots, law students and anyone with an interest in aviation safety or aviation law. New members who join in the last three months of 2026 get credit for all of 2027. The site also hosts videos, including interviews from 2024. The phone number is 410-571-1750.
