Katalyst Space
Robotic spacecraft for on-orbit satellite servicing
About Katalyst Space
Katalyst Space Technologies is a United States company building a fleet of autonomous robotic spacecraft that service and upgrade satellites in orbit. Its website lists team locations in Flagstaff, Arizona, Washington DC and Broomfield, Colorado. The company says space is crowded, contested and unpredictable, and that waiting months or years to respond to a failure or a changed condition is not an option in such a dynamic domain.
NEXUS spacecraft
- Can manoeuvre, transfer between orbits, dock with other satellites and perform robotic servicing
- Uses a patented Split Stewart Platform, a robotic arm system designed for space operations, which the company says is lighter and stiffer than standard robotic arms
- Carries a suite of sensors and optics for inertial guidance, navigation and control, including orbital transfers, and for relative navigation so it can rendezvous and dock
- Has large solar arrays that fold into a small form factor and, with custom avionics, deliver enough delta-V to travel from low Earth orbit to the moon and back without refuelling
- Has two payload bays to transport and install mission hardware, so that unprepared satellites can be given new capabilities on orbit
SIGHT upgrade
SIGHT is an upgrade that gives satellites real-time object detection and collision avoidance. It has its own independent power and communications and on-board data processing, to limit dependence on the host satellite, and it supports continuous monitoring of resident space objects. Katalyst says it can be delivered to orbit through ESPAStar, Vigoride orbital transfer vehicles or other transfer vehicles, installed by robotic servicers, or fitted to high value assets before launch. Other products named on the site are SHIELD, ARC and ICON.
Testing
The company states that it does not rely on software simulation alone and tests the whole system, covering sensors, software, actuators, propulsion and robotics, on a testbed built to validate its robotic spacecraft.
