J-Squared Technologies

J-Squared Technologies is a Canadian company that designs, builds and supports rugged embedded computing systems for harsh places.

The company was incorporated in January 1990. It began as a manufacturers' representative for semiconductor vendors in the Canadian market. In 1997 it started a product lifecycle management group. A distribution division followed in 2005. In 2013 it added a hardware systems division, first for small form factor computers. A maintenance, repair and overhaul division came in 2014. In 2018 it bought Octagon Systems and ESL Labs, a testing laboratory in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Its hardware is sold under the Octagon Systems brand. The range covers rackmount servers, small form factor computers, rugged displays, rugged cabinets, networking products, custom cables and Zero Voice Data Loss products. A product family called FALC handles video processing and AI inferencing at the edge. A software division called FALC-AI adds edge AI analytics.

When a product is not in the range, J-Squared can design it. Its engineers work on circuit simulation, PCB design, thermal modelling, EMC design and rapid prototyping. They also cover FPGA work, VHDL programming, real-time operating systems and sensor fusion. Aviation work includes avionics interfaces such as ARINC-429 and MIL-STD-1553B. The company designs to standards such as RTCA DO-160, DO-254 and DO-178B, and it also works with VPX, OpenVPX, SOSA and VME designs.

Support carries on after delivery. J-Squared offers in-service support, repair and overhaul, product testing and design services. As a value-added distributor, it selects, customises and integrates parts and adds technical support, logistics and stock management. It also handles parts that makers stop producing. Its PLM group provides Oracle Agile and Oracle Cloud PLM software projects and managed services. ESL Labs tests products for environmental and EMI/EMC needs in a 32,000 sq. ft. facility.

Customers include prime contractors, OEMs, system builders and end users. Sectors served are military use on land, sea and air, mining, oil and gas, power, rail, transportation, agriculture, construction, industrial work, autonomous vehicles and commercial edge AI. The company holds AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certification and employs about 100 people.
