Independent Forgings and Alloys

Independent Forgings and Alloys Ltd (IFA) is a privately owned forge in Sheffield, England, and describes itself as the only single-site forge in the world combining open-die radial (GFM rotary), press, hammer and ring rolling forging with closed-die extrusion, drop stamp and blade forging. It operates as a fully integrated metals service centre, from ingot and billet through forging to fully tested, released and machined products, under the motto From the Deepest Oceans to Outer Space. IFA received The King's Award for Enterprise 2026 for International Trade.

History

Metalworking on the site goes back almost two and a quarter centuries: the first known helve forging activity dates from 1587, Daniel Doncasters was founded in 1778, open-die hammer forging began in 1898, heavy hammer forging with two 5-ton hammers arrived in 1937, the UK's first mechanical manipulators were installed in 1947 and a large open-die press forge in 1961. IFA Ltd was founded in 2001 when it acquired the Doncasters open-die forge, invested in people, processes and capability through 2019, and in 2019 acquired the neighbouring Doncasters precision closed-die forge, integrating the two into one site with a ring rolling mill.

IFA states that as an independent, single-site company with a flat management structure it makes decisions fast and is easy to deal with, and that it supplies safety-critical components to aerospace, defence, oil and gas, marine and other quality markets worldwide.
