Elyse Energy

Elyse Energy is a French energy company that develops electric refineries in Europe. These plants turn low-carbon electricity into fuels and feedstocks for aviation, shipping and the chemical industry. Its first industrial projects are in France, Spain and Portugal.

An electric refinery works differently from a conventional one. Conventional refineries process crude oil. Elyse Energy's refineries use renewable or nuclear electricity to make hydrogen. They then combine it with carbon taken from biomass or captured from industrial emissions to make the fuels and feedstocks that economies need.

The company has three main products. These are e-methanol, sustainable aviation fuels and low-carbon hydrogen. Its technologies include water electrolysis, carbon capture and separation, methanolation and the Fischer-Tropsch process. It serves industry, air transport and shipping. Its sustainable aviation fuel is meant for civil aviation and defence.

Several projects are in development. BioTJet aims to make 87,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel in partnership with Avril, Axens, BioNext and IFPEN. Lusitania aims to make 200,000 tonnes of sustainable fuels a year at a 32 hectare site in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. NeoCarb is an e-fuels platform for sea and air transport in the Fos-sur-Mer industrial port zone.

Other projects target e-methanol. eM-Rhône plans 150,000 tonnes a year at the Roches-Roussillon platform. eM-Lacq plans 88,000 tonnes a year in the Lacq basin. Green Coast, planned with Lhyfe at Montoir-de-Bretagne, aims for 150,000 tonnes. eM-Numancia in Garray, Spain, aims for up to 50,000 tonnes a year.

The company says its mission is to decarbonise sectors that are hard to electrify. It argues that fuels Europe now imports can be made in France and across Europe, which supports energy independence and local industry.

Its founding partners have worked in energy for over 25 years. They say they have invested more than 5 billion euros in new energy infrastructure and helped bring wind, solar and biomethane to industrial scale. They previously created Tenergie, Vol-V Biomasse, Vol-V Energies Renouvelables and Dhamma Energy.
