About Electroair Electronic Ignition Systems

Electroair makes electronic ignition systems for piston engine aircraft. It is based in Waterford, Michigan, and sells to owners of certified aircraft, flight schools and builders of experimental aircraft. The company was founded in 1992.

Products

  • Ignition kits for 4 cylinder engines
  • Ignition kits for 6 cylinder engines
  • Spark plugs
  • Ignition switch panels, including the EA-13000 switch
  • Replacement parts
  • A certified replacement for the Bendix single drive dual magneto, for 4 and 6 cylinder Lycoming engines. Electroair says it is the only maker with a fully certified replacement for this system

An electronic ignition replaces one of the two magnetos on an engine. It uses sensors for crankshaft position, engine speed and manifold pressure to set spark timing, and the timing adjusts with altitude. The company's "Does this fit my aircraft" tool on its home page lists more than 500 aircraft models, from Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, Cirrus, Mooney and Diamond to Maule, Robin and Zlin.

Benefits the company reports

  • Smoother engine running and easier starting
  • 10 to 15 percent better fuel efficiency
  • Less spark plug fouling and longer plug life
  • Better high altitude performance
  • DO-160E tested and certified

History

Electroair first developed its electronic ignition system for homebuilt aircraft. Michael Kobylik bought the company in 2005 and took it through FAA certification. Aviation Consumer reported that the company gained supplemental type certificates (STCs) so the system could be fitted to certified production aircraft, first on four cylinder engines and then on six cylinder engines. The magazine noted around 500 systems in the field at the time of writing.

The company's timeline lists the first 4 cylinder system in 1992, a microprocessor controlled system in 1999, the first FAA certification project in 2009, the 6 cylinder FAA project in 2012, an installation centre programme in 2015 and EASA approval work. Its website notes two records set with Electroair ignition: a Guinness World Record of 98 inverted flat spins in 2016 and Bill Harrelson's record flight around the world.
