Department of National Defence (Canada)

The Department of National Defence is the Canadian government department that supports the Canadian Armed Forces. The Forces serve at sea, on land and in the air. They do this through the Navy, the Army, the Air Force and Special Forces. Their job is to defend Canadian interests at home and abroad.

The department covers many areas of defence work. It gives information on military equipment, history, operations, ranks, medals and demonstration teams. It also publishes the policies, standards, orders, directives and regulations that apply to the department and the Forces.

Defence equipment is a large part of its work. The department handles purchases and upgrades for aircraft, weapons, ships and vehicles. It also covers bases and infrastructure. That includes infrastructure projects, upgrades and maintenance, along with bases and support units.

The department also looks after people. It publishes pay rates and gives information on pensions, benefits, career transition, health, housing and relocation for military members. Civilian jobs are open at National Defence, and the department explains how to apply, and how pay and benefits work. Young people can join the Cadet Program.

National Defence also reports on military operations and exercises, and on its allies and partners. It works on efforts to address misconduct and support culture change across the Defence Team. The public can ask questions and request military records through the department. A policy paper called Our North, Strong and Free sets out a renewed vision for Canada's defence.
