About Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems
The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) is a US peer review organisation based at 4124 Clemson Boulevard, Suite H in Anderson, South Carolina, dedicated to improving patient care and safety in medical transport through accreditation standards, education and services. Formed as an organisation of non-profit organisations, it has 19 member organisations that each send one representative to its board of directors, supported by ad hoc subject matter experts, and has provided accreditation services for more than 35 years.
Accreditation standards
- Standards first developed through an extensive public comment process and published in 1991, revised every two to three years with input from all disciplines of the medical profession, and currently open for comments and recommended changes
- Cover patient care and safety in rotor wing, fixed wing, ground inter-facility, medical escort and special operations transport as well as Mobile Integrated Healthcare and community paramedicine
- Serve as a marker of excellence for federal, state and local government agencies, and require a medical service to be in substantial compliance to gain accreditation
Programmes
- Medical Transport Accreditation for air and ground services, starting with an initial application, a 1,000 dollar application fee and an aircraft hull and liability insurance certificate, followed by a programme information form and site survey
- Mobile Integrated Health Accreditation for patient-centred, on-demand care delivered in the home or mobile environment
- CAMTS Global, serving European and international medical transport providers while recognising cultural differences and national laws
- A published list of accredited services, updated in 2026 and including operators such as AirMed International, Guardian Flight, LifeMed Alaska, PHI Air Medical, Air Methods and Arkansas Children's Angel One Transport, plus a scholarship programme, forms, downloads, site surveyor resources, town hall meetings and a shop
Values
CAMTS states that the two highest priorities of any medical transport or mobile integrated healthcare service are quality patient care and safety, and that its vision is for all patients to receive appropriate and safe out-of-hospital care from qualified professionals. Its values include honest self-assessment, ethical business practices, continuous quality improvement and transparency in the accreditation process, overseen by a quality management process, and it is an ANSI member. The staff is led by an executive director and two associate executive directors.
