Center for Space Governance

The Center for Space Governance is a research institute. It studies current, emerging and future issues in the space economy. The site says it is based in Brussels and San Francisco.

The center was founded in Oxford in 2022. Its stated mission is to find new answers to the main challenges and chances for humanity in space. The site says it has also had team members in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Boston, London, Cambridge, Munich and Milan.

Its work falls into three parts. Landscape mapping looks at trends, stakeholders and activities in space. Research projects look at the key issues in space governance. Policy work means talking with policymakers at national agencies and at the United Nations.

The research areas are grouped by time. Current topics include commercial space policy, sustainable development, anti satellite weapons, space traffic management, norms of behavior and space in modern warfare. Emerging topics include great power competition, space and nuclear security, commercial space stations, space resources and property, lunar governance and planetary defense. Future topics include a constitution for space, space and artificial intelligence, human rights in space and Mars governance.

The team page lists two executive directors, Bartu Kaleagasi and Gustavs Zilgalvis, plus advisors and research affiliates. The site says a fellowship program ran in 2022 and 2023. Applications are closed now and no fellowship is running. The site gives an email for questions and links to its social media and Substack.
