About Breunig Aerospace

Breunig Aerospace is a research and development partner for space science institutes and the aerospace industry. It is based in Würzburg, Germany. The company calls itself an engineering team that works from first concept to qualified flight hardware.

It was founded in April 2017 as a one-person consulting business in Ochsenfurt. In early 2019 it moved its main office to the Technology and Start-up Centre in Würzburg. It has since grown into a small team of engineers and scientists. Their backgrounds cover space science, aerospace engineering, electronics, software and aviation. The company has its own design, prototyping and test facilities.

The team specialises in advanced optomechanics, precision structures and airborne electric propulsion systems. It works as a subcontractor, a consortium partner or a lead developer. It looks at problems that have no standard solution. It designs, makes and tests hardware, software and complete systems, and it stays responsible from concept through delivery and checks.

Its space work supports science missions. Mission names on its pages include IAXO, eROSITA, Einstein Probe, AXIS and ATHENA. In May 2024 it was responsible for assembling, integrating and testing the first full scale structural test demonstrator of the LISA optical bench. In March 2026 it delivered a structural thermal model of the LISA Point Ahead Angle Mechanism. In October 2026 it finished an upgrade and refurbishment of an x-ray mirror alignment and integration machine for a scientific customer in Italy.

In aviation, Breunig Aerospace develops electric drive trains. In October 2023, the SZD-55-2 made its first flight with an electric drive train from the company. In April 2025 it showed an electric refit concept for existing touring motorglider airframes at AERO2025. It held the first ground trials of that refit drive train in August 2026. It also took part in the AERO2026 trade show.

The company says its business has two cornerstones. One is to help the space science community take advanced missions from concept to reality. The other is to advance electric propulsion across sea, air and space.
