About AMOS

AMOS, short for Advanced Mechanical and Optical Systems, is a Belgian company based in Liège that develops and produces high-precision optical instruments, mechanical and optomechanical systems and test equipment for astronomy, space, telecommunications, laboratories and industry. With in-house optical manufacturing and mechanical welding, it takes each instrument from concept through qualification, on-site installation, commissioning and final acceptance.

Domains

  • Astronomy: high-accuracy telescopes from 50 cm to 4 m, subsystems for some of the largest telescopes in the world, and optical and mechanical systems that help telescopes see deeper and track more accurately. The site cites the Auxiliary Telescope System of the VLT in Chile as an example
  • Space: optical payloads, space subsystems and individual components, including instruments that resolve and measure celestial phenomena and sensing systems that acquire geospatial and environmental data
  • Test equipment: custom solutions for industrial, academic and scientific partners, including thermal vacuum chambers for tailor-made space, nuclear and research missions
  • Mechanics: design, machining, assembly and qualification of mechanical components and structures for astronomy, laboratories and industry

Optical production

AMOS operates a 350 square metre cleanroom at ISO 7 and ISO 5 levels, where it designs and manufactures optical components from fabrication through final integration. Using diamond turning, it produces flat, curved and free-form diffraction gratings and precision slits for compact spectrometers and sensors, and the company says it is among the few in Europe able to produce freeform multi-blazed gratings. It figures and polishes mirrors and optical substrates in glass-ceramics, fused silica, aluminium and silicon carbide, with spherical, aspherical or free-form surfaces. Lightweight mirrors range from 1 cm parts to primary mirrors up to 2.6 m in diameter. Teams handle optical design support, blank procurement, machining, figuring, polishing, coating and final testing, and each mirror is characterised and qualified against the optical specification and the environmental constraints of its mission.

Approach

The company describes its role as rethinking the system when conventional designs reach their limits under demanding performance or environmental constraints, and it assembles, integrates and tests all its systems in-house. It says it has supported astronomy and space missions worldwide and has worked with space agencies, observatories and industrial players.
