You need to get somewhere fast and in style. Should you charter a helicopter or a private jet? The answer depends mostly on distance and where you want to land.
The short answer
For short hops, such as city to city under about 150 miles, or a trip to a place with no airport, a helicopter is often best. For longer trips, a jet is faster, goes farther, and carries more people.
Where helicopters win
- Landing spots. A helicopter can land on a helipad, a rooftop, or a field, with the right permits. That puts you near your final stop.
- Short trips. You skip the drive to the airport, and the wait on arrival.
- Hard places. Offshore platforms, islands, and mountain sites are often reached only by helicopter.
Where jets win
- Range. A light jet flies several hours without stopping. Most helicopters need to refuel after a much shorter distance.
- Speed. Jets cruise much faster than helicopters.
- Weather and height. Jets fly high, above most weather.
- Space. Jets carry more bags and more people.
Side by side
| Point | Helicopter | Private jet |
|---|---|---|
| Best trip length | Short | Short to long |
| Landing spots | Helipads, rooftops, small sites | Airports with paved runways |
| Speed | Slower | Faster |
| Passengers | Usually fewer | Up to about nine on a light jet |
| Weather limits | More affected by low cloud and wind | Less affected, flies higher |
| Cost per hour | Varies, check quotes | Varies, check quotes |
Cost: compare the whole trip
Do not compare only the hourly rate. Add the time you save at each end. A helicopter that lands at your door can beat a jet once you count the car ride to the airport. A jet can win on a longer trip, because it covers more miles each hour. Ask for the full price, with fees, from each operator. Our guide to the private jet charter quote shows what to look for. Permits and rules
Landing in a city needs approval. Not every helipad is open to charter flights, and some places limit night flights or noise. A good operator handles this for you. Ask them to confirm that your landing spot is approved before you pay.
Combine both
Many travelers do both. They fly a jet for the long leg, and then take a helicopter for the last stretch. If you plan a trip like this, our guide to planning a luxury trip by private jet is a good start. For jet options, see the Cessna Citation CJ4 page.
Quick guide
- Under about 150 miles, or a site with no airport: ask about a helicopter.
- Over about 300 miles: ask about a jet.
- Bad weather season: a jet may be more reliable.
- Large group or lots of bags: a jet gives more space.
