Chorus Aviation has completed its purchase of SkyCare Air Ambulance, a fixed-wing air ambulance operator with its head office in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. Chorus, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, announced the closing on 2 November 2026. The sale closed on 1 November, about two weeks after the two companies signed the agreement on 19 October.

The price is about C$40 million. Chorus paid C$32 million in cash at closing. The rest, about C$8 million, is due by 31 March 2029 if SkyCare meets set performance targets.

What Chorus now owns

  • A company founded in 2006 by Frank Behrendt, its president and CEO.
  • Four bases: Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay and Kitchener in Ontario, and St. Andrews in Manitoba.
  • About 220 staff, including flight crews and acute and primary care medical teams.
  • 22 aircraft, a mix of turboprops and business jets. SkyCare's fleet page lists the Piper Navajo, the Metroliner, the Westwind and the Astra.
  • Medevac, repatriation, organ transport and charter flights across Canada and the United States, 24 hours a day.
  • Revenue of about C$48 million in 2025, based on unaudited numbers.

SkyCare has worked with Ornge, which runs air ambulance transport for the province of Ontario, for more than 20 years. It runs three Ontario medevac bases under that partnership and says it flies more than 3,000 patient transfers a year.

Where it fits

Chorus is a holding company. Its best known business is Jazz Aviation, which flies regional routes for Air Canada under the Air Canada Express brand. It also owns Voyageur Aviation in North Bay, Ontario, which does special mission flying, aircraft modifications and parts support; KADEX Aero Supply, a parts distributor with repair and overhaul services; Cygnet Aviation Academy, which trains pilots for the airlines; and Elisen & Associates, an engineering and certification firm.

SkyCare adds a medical flight business with its own crews and bases in Northern Ontario, where many communities depend on aircraft to reach a hospital. Chorus will present its third quarter 2026 results on 10 November 2026.
