About Wings of Carolina Flying Club

Wings of Carolina Flying Club is a not-for-profit flying club in Sanford, North Carolina. Its mission is to provide safe aeronautical training, low cost aviation education, inexpensive hourly aircraft rates and flying fun.

The club was founded in 1961 as the Chapel Hill Flying Club. The site says it is one of the oldest flying clubs in the nation. It has more than 400 members from the RTP, Southern Pines and Fayetteville areas.

Membership is open to anyone who agrees to support the club and its mission. Members range from new students to active professionals. Because the club is not-for-profit, it provides aircraft for member use at a low hourly rate compared with profit driven operations.

The site says the waiting list for initial flight training and checkouts has grown to more than fifty people. It says the wait to start training is several months. The club is working to expand training capacity without lowering safety or quality.

The club holds ground school classes, seminars and other events that are open to the public. The 2026 fall Private Pilot ground school meets on Wednesdays from 7 to 10 pm, from August 19 to December 9. The club also holds a cookout on the second Saturday of each month for $5 per person.

Visitors can come on Saturdays from 1 pm to 4 pm, when volunteer ambassadors are at the club. Visitors should tell the club in advance that they are coming.
