Saildrone
Autonomous unmanned surface vehicles for maritime defence and ocean mapping

About Saildrone
Saildrone, Inc. is a maritime defence and ocean intelligence company headquartered in Alameda, California, that designs, builds and operates unmanned surface vehicles powered by wind and solar energy. With more than 12 years of operations, over 2 million nautical miles sailed and 60,000 days at sea, its vehicles deliver persistent, wide-area intelligence and payload effects for governments and commercial customers, streaming data from anywhere in the ocean into customers' workflows. The company has a European headquarters in Copenhagen and is backed by investors including BOND, XN, Standard Investments, Emerson Collective, Crowley Maritime Corporation, Lux Capital, Social Capital, Tribe Capital, The Schmidt Family Foundation and Exor Seeds.
Platforms
- Spectre, a medium USV for anti-submarine warfare and ISR with near-silent propulsion, long endurance and capacity for towed arrays and variable-depth sonar, also configurable without the wing for higher-speed, low-observable missions carrying customer-furnished effectors
- Surveyor, engineered for persistent surface ISR, deep-ocean mapping and long-duration government and commercial missions with hydrographic and oceanographic payloads; the first production Surveyor was launched at Austal USA
- Voyager, a mid-size USV for maritime domain awareness, counter-narcotics, illegal maritime immigration, electronic surveillance and coastal mapping, the first USV to receive a Class certificate
- Explorer, a globally deployed platform for environmental and METOC sensing with a small footprint and extended presence
Capabilities and missions
- Real-time surface ISR using radar, vision, AIS fusion and AI-driven classification, plus payloads for long-range acoustic sensing and subsurface awareness
- Deep-ocean and coastal mapping with high-resolution multibeam sonar, sub-bottom profiling and cable route surveys
- Counter-drug, illegal fishing and border monitoring missions, and hurricane monitoring with NOAA, including the first video captured inside a Category 4 hurricane at sea
- Operations in GPS-denied environments in the Middle East and maritime domain awareness demonstrations for the US Coast Guard
Milestones
Saildrone's timeline includes the first USV to cross the Atlantic in both directions, the first national flag registration for its USVs, ISO 9001 certification and a published carbon impact report. The company says its renewable-powered vehicles stay on station for months, letting crewed ships focus on missions only they can accomplish.
