About Memorial MedFlight Indiana

Memorial MedFlight is a hospital air medical program. It runs as a department of Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, which is part of Beacon Health System. The program flies critically ill or seriously injured patients to the right level of care. It is CAMTS accredited.

MedFlight answers two kinds of calls. A scene response means the crew treats and flies a patient from the field. An inter-facility transport moves a patient between hospitals. Requests can come from hospitals, physicians, EMS services, police, fire departments, and rescue agencies. The team responds right away.

The program is based at Elkhart Municipal Airport. Crews are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. MedFlight serves northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. It can take patients to any hospital for scene calls and transfers.

The program flies an EC145 C-2 helicopter. Air Methods operates the aircraft under Part 135. MedFlight is supported by an aviation team of experienced pilots and mechanics. Each MedFlight pilot has logged more than 2,000 flight hours before becoming an air medical pilot.

The medical crew is made up of highly trained critical care transport specialists. Beacon Health System also offers maternal transport and a pediatric emergency and NICU transport team. These services work with the MedFlight program for patients who need special care.

The mission of Memorial MedFlight is to transport seriously ill or injured patients safely and efficiently. Patients travel between hospitals or from the pre-hospital setting to the most appropriate level of care. Safety is the program's focus. The program aims to be the regional model for the chain of survival and the first choice for air medical transport in its service area.

Community groups can request a fly in visit through a form. Landing zone preparation and safety information is also available for community groups. Feedback on transports can be sent through a separate form.
