MDS Coating Technologies

MDS Coating Technologies has developed and applied metallic-ceramic protective coatings since 1997. Its coatings protect gas turbine engines in commercial, military and industrial sectors. The main products are the BlackGold nanostructured coating and the ER-7 erosion resistant coating. The company also offers PVD coating systems for gas turbine engines.

The company says it has more than 20 years of field-proven experience. It has coated over 5 million airfoils worldwide. Its coatings protect compressor blades against sand, dust, salt, volcanic ash, sulfides, industrial pollutants and fluid droplets.

For helicopter operators in harsh environments, the company says time on wing can rise up to 10 times. For commercial aircraft customers, its coatings keep the surface finish on compressor blades. This can save up to 1.5% in fuel.

The company's solutions cover particle erosion, surface finish retention, corrosion and fluid erosion. Corrosion protection suits industrial gas turbines and aircraft flying in maritime environments. Fluid erosion is a common problem for industrial gas turbines and turbofan engines, and BlackGold is designed to protect against it.

The company says its gas turbine coatings are qualified by all major engine OEMs. They have accrued tens of millions of operating hours. The company says they have provided operators over $1 billion in savings.

MDS has received the 2013 R&D 100 Award and the AHS International Harry T. Jensen Award. It also received a 2013 Project of the Year from the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program. The company took part in the FAA Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise program, and it is accredited to Nadcap and AS9100.
