About Kilfrost

Kilfrost Ltd is a family-owned chemical manufacturer at Albion Works in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, in the north of England. The company has made aircraft deicing and anti-icing fluids for more than 90 years: founder Joseph Halbert invented a deicing fluid first used on football pitches and then on aircraft, and the site says Kilfrost created some of the first Type I, Type II and Type IV aircraft deicing fluids from the late 1930s. Today it supplies airports, airlines, ground handlers, executive jet operators, flight schools and private aircraft owners, as well as the rail industry, and also makes heat transfer fluids.

Aviation products

  • Kilfrost DF Plus: Type I deicing fluid qualified to AMS 1424
  • ABC-K Plus: Type II deicing and anti-icing fluid, and ABC-S Plus: Type IV fluid, both qualified to AMS 1428
  • Ground and runway deicers, including DP705 multipurpose deicing agent and TDIce concentrates
  • WWF Mod 3 windscreen wash

General aviation and TKS fluids

For light aircraft Kilfrost sells fluids for TKS in-flight ice protection systems, which are pumped over the leading edges to prevent ice build-up, and which can also be used on the ground to remove frost, snow and ice from parked aircraft:

  • TKS 406B: a glycol and alcohol fluid made to AL-5, DTD 406B and NATO S-745 standards, with deicing and anti-icing capability down to -60 degrees C
  • TKS 80: a non-flammable fluid without alcohol, for operators who require a non-flammable product
  • TKS R328: a glycol and alcohol blend developed for general aviation and light aircraft, supplied as a cold concentrate in 1, 5, 25 and 215 litre containers
  • RDF light aircraft deicing fluid

Technical support

Kilfrost runs an on-site laboratory with cold chambers and wind tunnels, provides a sample analysis service to SAE standards and can test tanks, equipment and storage facilities at the start and middle of the winter season. Its chief technical officer, Jerry Lewis, co-chairs the SAE International G-12 Aircraft Deicing Fluid Committee. Datasheets and safety information are provided through a technical portal, and products are sold through a network of distributors worldwide. The company supports Aerobility, a UK aviation charity for disabled people.
