About Fly Oz
- Cirrus trainingTrains in Cirrus aircraft, per its own website
Fly Oz is a flight school at 9 Richards Drive, Cowra Airport, Cowra, New South Wales, Australia. Founded in 2013, it is co-owned by Mark Dixon and Lyn Gray, both CASA approved flight examiners, and trains commercial pilots in classes capped at 10 to 12 students. The school is a registered training organisation (RTO 45300) and is CRICOS registered (03656B) to enrol international students, who make up about a third of the student body.
Courses
- Commercial pilot licence: 12 months, 170 flight hours, for a CASA CPL(A)
- Charter Ready dual diploma: CPL combined with an instrument rating, 12 months, 225 flight hours
- Instructor Ready triple diploma: adds a Grade 3 flight instructor rating, 14 months, 270 flight hours
- Instrument rating and flight instructor rating as stand-alone courses
- Recreational and private pilot training, night VFR, design feature endorsements and advanced training
Ground training covers every CASA CPL subject: human factors, meteorology, law, navigation, planning and performance, aerodynamics and aircraft general knowledge. Full-time students attend at least 20 hours a week, and eligible Australian citizens can defer tuition through the VET Student Loan scheme. Every licence, rating and endorsement can be tested at Cowra.
Fleet and facilities
The training fleet is the Piper Warrior for primary training, the Piper Arrow for CPL and navigation work with retractable gear and a constant speed propeller, the Cessna 206 for charter and operational training, the Beechcraft Duchess for multi-engine training and the Beechcraft Baron for advanced multi-engine and instrument flying. Fly Oz operates from a hangar at Cowra Airport with air-conditioned classrooms and student study spaces, and aircraft maintenance is done on site by the school's own licensed aircraft maintenance engineers.
Cirrus SR22 simulator
The school's simulator is built in a real Cirrus SR22 airframe with the original interior, sounds and eye point. It has a 160 degree visual system built on satellite imagery, glass cockpit avionics based on the Garmin Perspective Plus, a linked and weighted yoke with electric trim, and a flight model and handling based on the SR22, with current AIRAC data, approaches and navaids. It is used for instrument and IFR procedures including holds and 2D, 3D and LPV approaches, day and night flying in any weather, and busy airspace such as Bankstown and Canberra. Instrument rating students complete 18 of their 55 course hours in it.
Team
Head of Operations Lyn Gray has instructed for more than 21 years and was named Flight Instructor of the Year by the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2018. The site says every instructor was once a student at the school.
