About Chartair

Chartair is a general aviation company based at Darwin Airport in the Northern Territory. It has bases in Alice Springs and Katherine. The company was founded in 1974 by Roger Leach, and it says it is one of the longest flying general aviation companies in Australia.

Chartair says it has a fleet of more than 40 aircraft and can supply charter services for most needs. Its charter work includes commercial, VIP and government flights. It also flies FIFO crew changes for resource companies, tourism flights and medical charters.

Freight is a key service. Chartair can carry critical components, restock remote stations and reconfigure its aircraft for bulk loads. Its freight work includes pet transport and the movement of time critical spare parts.

Chartair operates scheduled passenger flights between Darwin and Katherine. It also runs Remote Air Services Subsidy (RASS) mail plane routes in the Northern Territory and Western Australia for the federal government. The mail plane serves remote communities. The company says it flies about 1,400,000 kilometres a year. It carries about 190,000 kilograms of freight and mail and serves around 200 remote communities across Australia.

Chartair is a major supplier to the federal and Northern Territory governments. Its government customers include the Department of Health, the Department of Education and regional councils.

Other services include aerial survey, aircraft recovery, aircraft maintenance and aircraft leasing. The company holds Part 145 maintenance approval, with hangars in Darwin and Alice Springs. It offers third party maintenance support and avionics work. It is the North Australian dealer and service repair centre for Genesys Aerosystems S-TEC autopilots, Aspen Avionics and Arctic Air Coolers.

Chartair is part of the Aviation Logistics Group. The group includes AirMed, a non emergency patient transfer company based in Sydney, and AirLink Airways, which is based in Dubbo. The website has a passenger quote form, a freight quote form and online booking for scheduled flights. Mail plane seats can only be booked by remote community members and service providers, not for tourism.
