About CalAir Aviation
- Cirrus trainingTrains in Cirrus aircraft, per its own website
CalAir Aviation is a flight school and aircraft rental and management company at Hawthorne Airport (KHHR) in Los Angeles, about two and a half miles from LAX. It trains and rents exclusively in Cirrus aircraft, and its website describes the fleet as the largest all Cirrus fleet in Southern California, with Generation 6 and Generation 7 SR20, SR22 and SR22T aircraft including a G7+ SR20 with Perspective Touch+ avionics and Safe Return emergency autoland. The school was founded by Jonathan Lucas, an Embry-Riddle graduate and Cirrus Standardized Instructor Pilot who served six years in the California Air National Guard.
Training
- Introductory flight courses and private pilot certificate packages, with a programme of about 150 hours of hands on training according to the site
- Instrument rating, commercial and other advanced certificates and ratings
- Cirrus transition training, from an initial transition course to avionics differences training, and six monthly currency checks for renting pilots
- An FAA approved Cirrus advanced aviation training device (AATD) with TorqueSim controls, Garmin based avionics software, wrap around screens and a CAPS pull simulator
All instructors have completed the Cirrus Training Center Instructor course and go through a refresher every six months, overseen by the school's designated CSIP. The site also lists 50 hour fleet inspections, half the 100 hour interval, and names Kim Davidson Aviation at Santa Monica as its maintenance provider.
Rental, management and sales
Aircraft are rented to qualified pilots, and the company manages owners' aircraft, arranges hangar and storage, coordinates maintenance and washes, and helps clients buy or sell a Cirrus. Destination based lessons to vacation spots are also offered.
Prices
In October 2026 the site listed hourly rates of US$380 for the SR20, US$425 for the SR22, US$475 for the G7+ SR20 and US$485 for the SR22T, US$165 per hour for the simulator, an introductory flight course at US$1,425 and a private pilot package at US$34,325, with certification courses from US$3,500 (calaironline.com/cirrus-aircraft and calaironline.com/services). Rates change; confirm with the school.
Cirrus training
The site describes CalAir as a Cirrus Certified Platinum Training Center, Cirrus Aircraft's highest training centre level, and says it hosts previews and events for new Cirrus models such as the SR G7 and the Vision Jet. CalAir is a training centre, not a Cirrus Aircraft service center. For the factory network and other Cirrus training schools see the Cirrus hub.
