About British Microlight Aircraft Association

The British Microlight Aircraft Association, or BMAA, is the members' organisation for microlight pilots and owners in the United Kingdom. It exists only to benefit its members. The BMAA has influenced the rules for microlight flying in the UK over the years.

Representing members is one of its most important jobs. It speaks up on open airspace, proportionate licensing and medical rules, sensible airworthiness oversight, and help for airfields in the planning process. Its aim is to protect the freedom to fly.

The BMAA is approved by the Civil Aviation Authority to review aircraft designs and approve them as compliant. The BMAA Technical Office does this for a much lower fee than the CAA, so both members and manufacturers gain. The company says lower costs help keep microlight flying affordable. The Tech Office also offers information for projects, renewals and builds.

The BMAA is also responsible for the ongoing airworthiness of two-seat microlight aircraft. Its Chief Inspector coordinates volunteer inspectors who help members keep their aircraft airworthy. The association runs courses to improve members' knowledge.

Flight safety is a main concern. The BMAA Safety Officer promotes safe flying methods and works with the Training Committee to raise training standards and safety awareness. The Wings award scheme encourages pilots to become better and safer.

Members receive a full colour magazine every month, called Microlight Flying. It carries news, flight and aircraft reports, event reports and updates from the BMAA Council. The BMAA also sends a monthly e-newsletter to anyone who subscribes for free.

The association holds several events each year. A rally for single seat microlights started in 2014 and grows each year. It also provides guidance on pilot licensing, a library of resources on microlighting, and a way to find flying schools and clubs.
