Air Ambulance Company – AirCARE1 Earns FAA Recognition for Safety Management System

AirCARE1 has been officially recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for their accepted Safety Management System (SMS) program. This prestigious acknowledgment aligns AirCARE1 with international safety standards, marking a significant milestone in the air ambulance industry. While the United States does not yet require a mandated Safety Management System for Part 135 Operators, the FAA commends organizations like AirCARE1 that voluntarily implement these high standards. Only about 5% of Part 135 Operators currently have an FAA-accepted SMS program, putting AirCARE1 in an elite category.

AirCARE1’s Commitment to Safety

AirCARE1 was founded with the mission to elevate safety standards in the air ambulance industry. The company’s dedication to safety risk management is a core value and is integral to their daily operations. To further this commitment, AirCARE1 voluntarily implemented a Safety Management System program (SMSVP) recognized by the FAA.

“We believe that superior patient care begins with a safe environment,” says Michael Amalfitano, President and CEO of AirCARE1. “Our SMS program reflects our dedication to minimizing risks and enhancing safety for our patients, their families, and our employees.”

Understanding the Safety Management System

A Safety Management System (SMS) is a formal, systematic, and proactive approach to managing safety risks. It includes four main components: policy, risk management, assurance, and promotion. Over a rigorous 16-month evaluation period, AirCARE1 defined their safety objectives, accountability, and responsibilities regarding safety risk management. They controlled safety risks by identifying hazards, analyzing risk factors, and making necessary improvements to flight operations. The effectiveness of these controls was ensured through consistent data collection and analysis. Additionally, AirCARE1 fostered a safety culture by training staff in safety risk management and encouraging open communication about safety concerns.

“Implementing our SMS was a thorough process, but the benefits are clear,” says C.R. Sincock, II, Avfuel’s Executive Vice President. “It’s not just about compliance; it’s about creating a proactive safety culture within the company.”

Benefits of FAA-Recognized SMS

Aligning their SMS with the FAA’s Safety Management System Voluntary Program (SMSVP) brings numerous benefits to AirCARE1 and their patients. The primary goal is to foster a safety culture within the company and support a proactive approach to identifying and addressing problems before they occur. For patients, this commitment to safety risk management provides extra comfort and peace of mind, ensuring they receive the highest standards of care. FAA recognition also helps AirCARE1 attract high-caliber staff members dedicated to the company’s safety culture.
