About Survival Systems

Survival Systems Limited, also called SSL, makes survival and safety training equipment. The company was incorporated in 1982. It is based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Its stated aim is to protect human life through realistic training technology.

The main product is the METS, which stands for Modular Egress Training Simulator. It is used to teach people how to escape from a vehicle that is underwater. In aviation, this is known as helicopter underwater escape training. Each METS is built to the client's needs. Versions exist for fighter and attack helicopters, for submerged vehicles such as the AAV and HMMWV, and for fast rescue craft and rigid hull inflatable boats.

SSL also makes personnel rated lift systems. These are lifting systems built to carry people during training. The company says it is the only maker of true personnel rated lift systems for the METS. The first one came out in 2005. Other products include environmental training aids and fire and rescue simulators.

The Survival Training Simulation Theater, or STST, adds hoisting, waves, wind, rain, fog, sound and lighting to training. SSL set up a first of its kind theater and research center in 2005. The company says it has been contracted for 115 METS units, 63 lift systems, over 90 environmental training aids and 17 theaters in more than 30 countries.

Training services cover instructor and diver development. They also serve military and civilian aviation, oil and gas, maritime, firefighting and industrial work. Courses named include OPITO, CAPP and STCW. SSL also offers equipment and site specific training for its simulators.

Maintenance is part of the offer. SSL does annual equipment inspections and reports, supplies new or refurbished parts, and trains staff on maintenance and inspection. The METS and other SSL equipment hold a NATO Commercial and Government Entity code.

The website shares thank you notes from crews. One group of pilots says the training helped them escape after an aircraft filled with water. A pilot with 17 years of experience says the training prepared him for a crash. The site also has a form for enquiries.
