About Development Bank of Japan
Development Bank of Japan Inc., known as DBJ, is a Japanese financial institution that lends, invests and advises companies in Japan and abroad.
Its corporate philosophy is to design the future with financial expertise. The bank says it aims to keep widening financial frontiers, to give the best solutions to customers and society, and to pursue sustainable development for Japan and the world. It describes itself as a value co-creation partner that joins investment, lending and advisory knowledge.
Financing is one core area. It includes medium to long-term loans, which draw on the bank's experience as a government-affiliated lender. It also offers structured finance, real estate asset financing, syndicated loans, asset-based lending and debtor-in-possession financing. Sustainability linked loans, a green building certification and a regional emergency response program add to the list. The bank also runs crisis response operations when the government designates it to supply funds after disasters or financial crises.
Investing is a second area. DBJ provides mezzanine financing, equity and funding for buyouts. It runs funds with other financial institutions and operating companies. A special investment program supplies growth capital with partial government backing.
Advisory services cover M&A, business succession, support for startups, overseas expansion, business restructuring and DX support. DBJ also publishes research reports and has an asset management business.
Aviation shows up in its recent news. In October 2026 the bank announced an additional preferred equity investment in Willis Lease Finance Corporation, a company in the engine leasing business for commercial aircraft. DBJ also issues bonds. It reported its 20th sustainability bond in October 2026, with green and sustainability bonds issued for thirteen years in a row.
