Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI)
CAAFI is a coalition that works to bring sustainable aviation fuels into commercial aviation.
About Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative
The Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative, called CAAFI, is a coalition. It works to promote drop-in sustainable aviation fuels, often called SAF, for commercial flying. The coalition includes airlines, airports, aircraft and engine makers, energy producers, researchers, and government agencies.
CAAFI says its goal is to promote alternative jet fuel options. These fuels should have safety and costs equal to petroleum-based jet fuel. They should also improve the environment and support energy supply security for aviation.
The site says CAAFI has worked since 2006. It lists focus areas including feedstocks, fuel qualifications, supply chain development, deployment, state initiatives, end users, sustainability, and international activities. The site also lists tools such as SAF readiness, prescreening guidance, fuel readiness level, and guidance for selling SAF.
The site includes a timeline of government actions that support SAF. It starts with the Energy Policy Act in 2005. It also lists the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the U.S. Aviation Climate Action Plan from 2021, and the Inflation Reduction Act from 2022.
The resources section includes events and webinars, white papers, video resources, FAQs, funding, and links. The site also has a glossary, news sources, and a page on CAAFI in the media. An archive of past events and webinars is available.
The contact page asks visitors to choose their primary role. The options include academia, aerospace manufacturer, fuel producer, fuel supplier, and government entity. The site also links to a LinkedIn page and invites organizations to become members.
