Amazing flight school. All the instructors I've met / flown with have been very talented and professional. The admin staff are all very knowledgeable and friendly, too.
Huge shoutout to Jayme, the schools president. He is willing to go above and beyond to ensure the success of the students. He ended up having to write me half a dozen letters so that I could qualify for a grant I was eligible for -- which he did promptly, and without issue. So appreciated.
I've read the other reviews on here; it's important to realize that flight training is performance based. The better you're able to grasp the content and do well on the air exercises the faster you're able to get your license/rating. While flight training is ridiculously expensive, I feel as though SATC has a really solid training plan to get students ready for their check rides in an efficient and cost-effective way.
I have been excited to start flight school for a while, and called a few schools around Calgary to get information. For some reason, every time I called Spring Bank for the front Desk option I had never gotten somebody on the line. I tried to call again and pressed (2) for chief operations, in which I got Kelsey. I booked my discovery flight with Kelsey who was super nice and helpful. She found me a flight quickly for the next day. I mentioned I was going to bring along a friend.
The next morning I called the school thinking it was in a Cessna 150 and if a third person would fit. Kelsey assured me that it was in a Cessna 172. Kelsey also mentioned that today was windy and may be a bit turbulent, I told her we were flight attendants and we were used to it. She chuckled and then said it probably will be okay and she will talk to my instructor Mike and for him to give me a call back. Not once saying my lesson was cancelled. I did not get a phone call from Mike so I left my house and drove down to Springbank (40 min drive).
10 minutes before check in time, I get a phone call from a woman working the front desk, telling me that due to winds the discovery flight had been cancelled. I told her that’s disappointing news, but I understood. Since I literally just pulled in, I walked in hoping to reschedule. I walked to the front desk, very friendly introduced myself, and said I was supposed to have a discovery flight. I was immediately rudely cut off, and was told “Yes, I literally just called you.” Shocked at her attitude I told her I wanted to reschedule for a later date. And then I asked (still in a friendly tone) how common it was to cancel a lesson 10 minutes prior to check in. Again, she responded rudely saying that “Kelsey told you earlier and cancelled with you.” I told her she did not. The woman continues to argue that she did.
If Kelsey had cancelled with me, why would this woman also then call to cancel? And why 10 minutes prior to check in to tell me that my flight is cancelled? I couldn’t take this woman’s rude attitude so I just walked out very discouraged that I didn’t want to train at Springbank anymore.
My first impression was ruined as soon as I stepped foot in the training centre. After speaking with many friends who have trained at Springbank, they knew exactly who I was talking about. Again, I was understanding that I couldn’t fly due to the winds, I accepted that. However, the gaslighting and rude behaviour of the woman at the front desk makes me not want to associate myself with this school. I have many friends that are also wanting to start flying and I’ll have to let them know of my experience.
I've had an overall great experience at this school, got my PPL CPL and MIFR rating here within 2 years. Any of the bad reviews are just students that are mad that they can't pass a flight test and aren't ready to solo. The team at SATC wants to ensure you are successful so they make sure you are very prepared. Another bonus about this school is that it's recognized by the airlines. If you put in max effort you will have a good time. If you don't put in the effort your experience will be the same everywhere. The cost of flight training will be high everywhere due to the rise in gas prices and maintenance so honestly it's hard to complain. Being based of CYBW is also a bonus since it's class C so you'll get very comfortable with controlled airspace. Overall a great school.
I am very disappointed with how unprofessional SATC staff is. I booked my discovery flight and was scheduled for Sunday. 45 mins before my class, they called and cancelled due to bad weather and rebooked me for following Monday. They said Monday is clear skies and we can fly out and then this morning an hour before my flight they cancelled again due to weather being cold. I understand safety is important and I would never want to fly if it’s unsafe but as a flight school, can’t you update a bit sooner than the very last minute. Both times, I got ready, packed my lunch and drove midway.

a year agoI bought a gift card for my husband. He didn’t have any experience in past. It was incredible! We had a really professional instructor. Thanks!
