Alaska sets target date for launch of Seattle-to-Seoul route
Alaska Airlines has officially announced a launch date for its highly anticipated nonstop service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea.
The inaugural flight is scheduled to depart on July 1, 2024, marking a major step forward in Alaska’s international expansion plans and reinforcing Seattle’s role as a critical trans-Pacific gateway.
A Strategic Transpacific Connection
This will be Alaska’s first-ever route to South Korea and its second international long-haul destination after launching service to Belize in 2021. The move comes as the airline deepens its ties within the oneworld alliance, offering more seamless global connectivity for its customers.
“This new route is a milestone for Alaska Airlines,” said Andrew Harrison, the airline’s chief commercial officer. “Seoul is a dynamic, modern city that offers tremendous opportunities for leisure and business travel. We’re thrilled to provide our guests with direct access to this key Asian market.”
Daily Service and Aircraft Plans
The Seattle–Seoul route will initially operate daily, utilizing a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner wet-leased from Spanish charter operator Air Europa. This is a temporary arrangement while Alaska works to expand its own widebody capabilities or partner with oneworld members for future service.
Flight times are expected to average just under 11 hours eastbound and 10.5 hours westbound, offering travelers an efficient, comfortable option for crossing the Pacific.
Boost for Seattle Hub and Global Alliances
As a primary hub for Alaska, Seattle continues to grow in importance. The Seoul addition strengthens the city’s role as a key connector in the Pacific Northwest, providing direct access to Asia and increasing competition with rivals like Delta and Korean Air.
Alaska’s entry into the Seoul market also opens up a wide range of onward connections through Korean Air, a fellow oneworld alliance member, giving passengers access to dozens of Asian destinations via Incheon.
Looking Ahead
With the July 1 launch, Alaska Airlines positions itself as a serious contender in the international market, leveraging global partnerships and strong domestic operations.
“We’re not just adding a dot on the map,” Harrison said. “We’re building bridges across the Pacific and setting the foundation for more international growth in the years to come.”
As the airline navigates evolving global travel demands, all eyes will be on the success of this new route and what it signals for Alaska’s future ambitions abroad.
