As a former student pilot, I would like to share my personal experiences here.
Since training to become an airline pilot is quite demanding and involves considerable financial effort, it was important to me to find a reliable training place. That's why I can only recommend everyone to get a personal impression of the training position.
I had the flight school introduced to me at a personal appointment and was immediately invited to watch live on the simulator. Furthermore, I was able to talk to other student pilots without obligation and in a pleasant atmosphere. I was very impressed by the friendly, open and collaborative approach. That's why, after some time to think about it, I decided on the EAA.
My decision turned out to be the right one, as the focus was placed on a later job in the cockpit. This was done both with regard to flying training and with regard to professional personality development.
Like any course of study, this training also requires a significant degree of discipline and initiative. I can say from personal experience that, in addition to intensive face-to-face teaching, you also have to deepen the material to a large extent yourself, and the teachers who teach are always a very good source of support. It was also natural for us student pilots to help each other with questions. (This was also very much supported and encouraged by the school.) In any case, you should not start intensively studying for the theory exams too late, as the material to be learned deals with various disciplines and is very in-depth. In addition to the theory lessons, practical lessons are also added in parallel and successively.
The first flying experiences are gained under visual flight conditions (landing training, circuits, time building…). After completing the “visual flight phase” and taking the first exams, you then go to the simulator (FNPT II), where the foundation for instrument flight is laid. This training phase is one of the most important and generally very demanding. Therefore, at this stage you should have already successfully completed a few theory tests so as not to come under time pressure. After the simulator training, we continue with practice on the plane. During IFR practice with a Cessna 172, you deepen what you have just learned on the simulator and gain your first IFR experience. Parallel to the IFR practical lessons, theory tests are often held in Vienna at “Austro Control”. After successfully completing all theory tests and IFR practice with the C172, you then board a twin-engine aircraft (DA42) for the first time. This final phase of training is mainly about carrying out the IFR practice you have already learned, combined with the characteristics of a twin-engine aircraft. Finally, the training ends with a final test flight on the DA42.
Ultimately, I can say that I really enjoyed training to become a commercial pilot at the EAA and I look back fondly on this strenuous and demanding time. Thanks to the whole team for the good time.
