Mike is running an incredible business at Tropicbird. His decades of expertise makes him a great leader and instructor. I was visiting the Big Island and got very lucky and was able to have Mike as my instructor. He let me fly within my comfort limits and had so much expertise on the ins and outs of all things flying related in regards to Hawaii. We got to fly up to the North Side and practice touch and gos. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND for anyone looking at furthering their training while either living or visiting Kona. Recommend calling a week in advance to get on the schedule. Thanks for everything Mike and look forward to the next time we meet!
Tropicbirds was a spectacular way to parts of the big island my wife and I never would have seen from the ground.
My pilots license isn’t current so I flew with, Mitch one of the CFIs. He was great at helping me refresh my flying skills and was also an incredible tour guide.
I’d recommend going this route to any visiting pilots.
I had an incredible experience. Mike and everyone working there were fantastic. Mike was one of the most calm and easygoing instructors I have ever flown with. I would rate this as one of the best if not the best flight instruction experiences I have had in my 40 years of flying. I highly recommend this school for flight instruction on the Big Island.
Flying out of Kona is an absolute blast, and the weather makes an accelerated program more viable here than just about anywhere else. The crosswind expertise that pilots develop in Hawaii is also a huge asset for future careers. I got my license in an accelerated program here a few years ago, I recommend it to everyone. And gotta love that Diamond! Thanks for everything Mike!
Mike from Tropicbird gave us an unforgettable flying experience over the Big Island, taking us up the coast from Kona Airport to Upolu and back in their C172. He began with an in-depth briefing about flying in Hawaii, covering the islands’ unique volcanoes, weather patterns, and airspace. As a thoughtful touch, he even gifted us a VFR area chart as a souvenir!
Both my partner and I are licensed private pilots, and Mike proved to be an excellent instructor. He quickly adapted to our different experience levels, allowing us to fly the majority of the time while staying in control and providing support whenever needed. The flight was both challenging and rewarding in the best way, making us feel confident and capable despite being in a new country and unfamiliar airspace.
We were treated to incredible views, including spotting whales from above, and Mike shared fascinating insights about local geography, landmarks, history, resorts, and even restaurant recommendations. It exceeded our expectations in every way.
The entire experience was seamless, exciting, and deeply memorable. We wouldn’t hesitate to fly with Mike again and highly recommend Tropicbird to anyone considering an instructional flight in Hawaii. Thank you again, Mike—and if you’re ever in Switzerland, you’re welcome to fly with us! All the best to you (and your cat)!
