a year agoThis is a great flight school with great planes. The staff is always helpful. It's a great airport and a great place to learn to fly. Whether you're in Portland or Vancouver WA this is a great airport to learn to fly at. I got my privates pilots license here. You get to talk to Portland on every take off and landing. It is also less busy than many other airports so you can get in and out of the airspace easy which saves money.

4 weeks agoIt’s easy to tell which reviewers are CFIs for this school, and which aren’t. Aero costs less per hour than other flight schools, but the instruction is extremely sub par and will take you a lot more time and hours, and so more money, and that’s if they don’t tell you quit first. The planes are badly maintained enough that moss growing inside the planes are normal. I’ve flown in most of the planes in their fleet. They have a long history of discouraging students, myself included (I ended up leaving and getting my PPL somewhere else), that stretches back at least 17 years. I met a man whose sister was encouraged to quit 17 years ago, and I’m sad to say it hasn’t stopped. I just found out from a buddy about another instance of it happening. That same buddy also just left this school. Their chief CFI left to take a downgraded position at a different flight school. The don’t have many checkrides at all, and considering they are a larger school in the area, they should have more than the smaller schools, but they don’t. One of the CFIs send a friend of mine to his checkride without having covered emergency maneuvers, and he had to find someone to tell him what to do and hope for the best. Since the DPE told him what maneuver it would be on the ground, then gave him a break, he was able to get a crash course from a pilot over the phone, and passed, but this isn’t acceptable. The first buddy I mentioned was put into checkride prep, and then an instructor realized he’d never been taught emergency maneuvers. In a good MONTH, they’ll have 2 people pass checkrides. In a bad WEEK at the school I’m at now, they’ll have 2. There’ve been months where this school has had no checkrides at all. They have a board in the dank, dark lobby that lists solos and checkrides, and it’s unacceptably few, especially for the size of the school. One CFI, on his own, at my current school has had more checkrides than Aero’s had total for this year. This doesn’t even touch on the stuff that my CFIs are Aero taught that were wrong. I have pics of the white board with incorrect info. Crossing the threshold at 80? If you’re reading this trying to decide on a flight school, then you should know what pilots know—whether in knots of miles, you’re going to balloon and have a difficult time landing, if you can at all without going around. Speaking of landing, they don’t teach you soft field landings on a real soft field even though there’s one available, and they don’t teach you how to land on runways with steep glide slopes, and they don’t let students make certain flights that all the other schools in the area allow. You aren’t going to learn to be a good pilot here. Save your money and go anywhere else. Just from a safety standpoint, I wouldn’t send my worst enemy here. They’d be up in the sky with me, badly trained. Don’t do it. Safe yourself the heartache. Go anywhere else.

4 years agoAlways wanted to earn my pilots license. This was a great place to start the process. My inspector was detail oriented and had over 10 years of flying actively. It was a sunny day out when we went, nearly perfect weather. Easy ride- a lot nicer than I originally expected. I will be back again.

3 years agoCollin is the best pilot!! My first flight with him was as smooth as butter and he was so fun, patient, knowledgeable and caring. He is a gentleman! If I end up taking lessons at Aero Maintenance Flight Center I would feel so privileged to have Collin as my instructor. Also, Emily at the front desk was wonderful on the phone with me in scheduling my discovery flight. She was super friendly, accommodating and understanding. Great communication and experience overall. Woohoo!
