First couple of reviews seem like left by owner or employees of Hortman. Here is a real review:
Very low quality training, most instructors are young kids fresh out of school with very little or no experience in flight training, their main goal is to build time on students and get out of there ASAP.
Dishonest people; do not trust what they say, advertised prices are not correct, download their syllabus and you will see that it requires more hours than what they advertise or tell you.
Their planes look like they've been in a war, most of them are beat up with malfunctioning equipments.
Shop around, you can find places with more experienced instructors and well maintained planes.
I am an instructor at Hortman and Ali Gokcek's review is way off base. Yes, many instructors are on their way to airline jobs, but many are not and like me, teach for the love of aviation. Planes used for intensive flight training are by definition not pristine, as they are learning machines capable of being abused by students. All our planes fly well and are far better than many at other flight schools where the costs are far higher. The costs indicated in our materials are correct and achievable, but the student must also apply themselves and show up for class prepared and on time. If not, it will take longer and cost more. Flying is fun, but serious business and we won't compromise safety to meet a cost target on the part of the client.
This was one of the best places to learn to fly. Although the place closed shortly after Herb Hortman passed away, a new management team has resurrected the business and Hortman's legacy. From what I can tell, the spirit of Hortman Aviation is still very much present. My comments are based on the original Hortman Aviation where I learned to fly several years ago. It was very much a family business and I grew close to Herb, Maggie and the kids during my training. The company has excellent flight instructors who teach the "hortman" method and the maintenance department is first rate. The company also operated charters too. I highly recommend flight training here.
I got my primary back in the 70's. Norm Hortman signed me off. The Yankee is a great primary trainer. It made checking out in Pipers and Cessnas a piece 'o pie. He was a great instructor. After he died things got a little wonky at 3M and I transferred my flying to other strips. But they had a great operation then. I am a grass strip/unicom kinda flyer - and that's getting harder and harder to find. 'specially here in the LA basin...
