The Oklahoma Aeronautics Academy is outstanding place to become a pilot, providing individual one-on-one training. Ken is a great instructor. He makes learning interesting and fun. He always makes me comfortable to ask any question. He is very thorough in making sure that I have a complete understanding of the materials needed to pass the written test and make me a good pilot. This school is very affordable compared with some others in the area. I fully recommend this school to anyone who wants to learn to fly and have a great time doing it.
Disclaimer, I didn't actually fly here, just simply reached out while looking for prospective locations.
TL;DR: "Simply put, I'm impressed by the service that was provided to me, and I cannot shake the impression that these are quality people that simply have a passion to help a fellow aviator. What more can you ask for?"
First impression, prompt, courteous, and welcoming answer to my phone call. After stating my needs/what I was looking for, Julie was on the ball in answering my questions and very up front in a professional manner on not being certain about some things and requesting time to verify.
We settled on that this would likely not be the place to meet my needs and accommodations (I was looking for highly 'accelerated' instrument training on extremely short notice in my own basic equipped aircraft, and I'm from states away). I appreciated how honest and to-the-point Julie was with my questions, and I appreciated even more the fact that she followed up in the days after to verify the uncertainties she had from some of my questions, even though we had already established that this wouldn't be the place for me.
She even went the extra mile to point me to OTHER flight schools that would be able to help me.
That sticks out to me, who points a potential customer away to a 'competitor'? Someone who cares and just wants to do good business, that's who. Simply put, I'm impressed by the service that was provided to me, and I cannot shake the impression that these are quality people that simply have a passion to help a fellow aviator. What more can you ask for?
After doing ALL of my training with Oklahoma Aeronautics Academy (OAA), I just PASSED my Private Pilot (PPL) practical exam on the first attempt and have my PPL certificate! OAA is the only school I have experience with, but I can’t imagine ANY school having more seasoned, in-depth training. OAA’s mission statement from the website: “Our program is not an FAA ‘Minimum Standard’ endeavor. Our goal is to teach airmanship beyond the FAA minimums and to help the student be an accomplished private pilot, with a safety mindset, with the best aeronautical decision making skills, as well as a pilot that is ready to progress on to advanced pilot certifications and be a meaningful member of the aviation community.” Having finished the PPL program, I can absolutely confirm that OAA's mission statement isn’t just talk! It is real; it is the standard, and it is achieved. Ken does most of the PPL training one-on-one, and his decades of experience as both a pilot and an aircraft mechanic (A&P with IA authority) are just invaluable. Students of course learn what is required, but they learn so much more. Knowing MORE about how the plane WORKS absolutely helps to fly it, but also helps to understand in emergency situations what is going on, and what to do about it. Bob again has decades of valuable experience. I did some flight training with Bob, but he also drilled me on both knowledge and flight skills prior to my practical exam. He sure exposed what I had NOT mastered, which gave me opportunity to polish those things prior to my exam. It is such an advantage to have TWO instructors with this much experience! Julie juggles all the OAA students and like magic somehow makes the schedule work! She is so helpful and accommodating. So… If you want to finish your PPL as fast as possible, with the minimum amount of work possible, this is not the school for you. On the other hand, if you want a lot MORE from your flight school, and you are willing to take the time and work hard, you won’t be disappointed in the Oklahoma Aeronautics Academy. You will have in-depth, one-on-one instruction from truly seasoned pilots. You will become a more knowledgeable, more skilled, safer pilot, that is ready to take your family to the skies with confidence, and ready to advance further if that is your desire.
Ken Larcher is an excellent instructor who has many years of aviation experience, and it really shows in his teaching. Small class sizes and 1:1 learning in the classroom really gives the students a great advantage. My son is a student and I have complete confidence in Ken that he will prepare my son to obtain his private pilots certificate. Oklahoma Aeronautics Academy has great hands-on learning opportunities with a simulator which can be programed and used to train for any situation a student might need in their aviation future. On top of that the airplane is great to fly, and in great condition thanks to Ken being an A&P. The school accommodates busy weekly schedules, and the school is very flexible when scheduling class/flight time. I can only rate this school 5/5 stars but in reality, it's a 10/5 stars. I highly recommend this school if aviation is something that interest you!
I recently became part of the OK Aeronautics family, and it is JUST THAT! A family! Julie and Ken are incredible people! From flexibility on class scheduling, to the one on one extensive training they offer, you are sure to walk away a true Aviator! They provide a comfortable environment to learn in, are incredibly knowledgeable in this field and will stay with you on any subject for as long as it takes to get you up to speed.
