EXCELLENT FLIGHT SCHOOL AND AIRCRAFT RENTAL COMPANY!
I have been going to this flight school for over 4 years now. It's a family owned business which only hires staff and instructors who meet their high safety and educational expectations. Larry and Corey have been my two main instructors in the past. They are knowledgeable, friendly and willing to work with you at your own pace. But I have heard great things about other instructors from friends in the club too! You just can't go wrong.
T&G flight school offers ground schools regularly and they make it engaging with a tour of the control tower as part of it. You can buy books, a flight log and all the things you need right at the office! I really like that I can drop in on any ground school class in the future after having paid once.
I can not say enough about the well maintained planes which are upgraded regularly with new instruments and equipment. I have personally been in over 10 of T&G's airplanes and they are all clean and well kept. The flight school offers beginner flight training mostly in Cessna152 and 172 aircrafts. Plus, they have bonanzas, a 310, a Cheyenne and a bunch of other planes for more advanced students who might want a commercial license.
You can call to fly with them any day/time of the week – a necessity for my crazy schedule! I actually found them on Groupon! Anyone interested in aviation should check out this flight school in CLE. And if you are interested in chartering a plane for a business meeting or a private getaway, they can accommodate you through their charter company, Air Z! Their prices are competitive and my dad has used their charter services on a few different occasions for funerals, birthdays, and other events. Thank you T&G/ Air Z for making aviation great in Cleveland!
I've been flying with T&G for close to 10 years. My experiences overall have been satisfactory, but not consistently stellar. T&G's biggest plus is their wide selection of aircraft - from "inexpensive" 2 seat trainers to high performance 6 seaters and twins. The downsides I feel worth mentioning are that T&G's office staff can take a long time to respond to (written) inquiries, reserved aircraft sometimes are mysteriously not available (and T&G gives no notice to the reservation holder that their plane is down, causing me and my guests to show up at the airport to find no plane) and anything but critical aircraft maintenance problems sometimes take months to be looked into. Furthermore I would not consider their rental rates to be competitive - in fact they are 20-30% higher than wet rates published by other local clubs. T&G's flight instructors seem to have a high turnover rate. Recently, every year when I renew my proficiency check, the instructor I'd flown with the previous year is no longer with T&G. The newer instructors also don't always communicate well - sometimes canceling scheduled flights without letting the student know! T&G's climbing rental rates and the inconsistent responsiveness have pushed me to start thinking about getting a membership with a different flight club. However it's difficult to beat the diversity of T&G's fleet, so I keep coming back. Hopefully the staff see this review and take it to heart, then make some improvements to enhance the experience going forward.
Took lessons here for about 4 months, was a completely new pilot and put my trust into this company. After I had reached about 30 hours of what I thought to be good instruction, I had to take a break for a few months. I’ve since found a new instructor and I feel tricked by T&G. I have been robbed of my time and money, but unfortunately didn’t know this till I was $6,000 invested. Don’t make my same mistake. They run on a bare minimum/good enough system, which somebody who wants to be a safe/professional pilot will only be hurt by, due to the foundation being wrong, it’s hard to build knowledge and progress. The instructor I had was like 21 and you could tell was there to simply gain hours and money for himself as I had seen with other instructors at T&G. Also the planes are NOT well kept and again operate on a good enough based system which really makes a NEW pilot feel safe.(I’ve experienced too many mechanical issues to even begin to explain). I’ve had 3 solo flights with them and had failures due to poor upkeep which forced me to land 2/3 of the time. I must say that a solo can be scary, but when your communications fail which you need to have in order to navigate the airport correctly made for a very interesting experience on my first time ever flying a plane on my own. Although the company wasn’t a great benefit, the ability to fly out of Burke Lakefront had its benefits, the experience of a controlled tower and scenic location were a few of them but once again T&G was not a good company in my opinion to fly with. And again don’t waste thousands of dollars like I did you will be very frustrated in the end.
