a year agoOn the advice of several aviators in our EAA1114 chapter in Apex NC I went to Charles and South Oaks to learn tailwheel flying and a tailwheel endorsement. Charles is extremely knowledgeable about his craft and a patient teacher. He’s got a great enthusiasm and understanding for what he teaches, and it absolutely shows in his style and methodology. I flew with Charles for three days, morning and afternoon with a break for lunch, and absolutely loved it. His Cubcrafters airplanes are well-suited for the task at hand, well-maintained, and an absolute joy to fly in. We practiced at South Oaks initially and then flew to eight other grass strips in the surrounding area, all with varying lengths and surrounding terrain. Charles’s approach to teaching is to focus on practical stick and rudder skills, focusing on flying the airplane and learning by doing. From taxi exercises to challenging short field landings in a wooded strip, everything has a purpose and above all is a heck of a lot of fun. Tailwheel training is a fun endorsement and an excellent way to develop and improve stick and rudder skills. Charles is a great instructor and I highly recommend him and the South Oaks Aerodrome. Carve out some time, book ahead (Charles is rarely idle and has a full schedule), jump in one of these wonderful airplanes and have a great experience!

6 years agoBeautiful 1850' turf runway; professionally maintained. Hanger space available on the field. Probably the best tail-wheel instruction east of the Mississippi, or anywhere for that matter. Amazing fleet of beautiful tail-dragger aircraft (from J3 to Legend Cub) to learn in. Home of EAA Chapter 1423.
