AerCap’s history is marked by strategic acquisitions and growth initiatives that have positioned it as a leader in its industry. The merger of AerCap and Genesis Lease in 2006 marked a significant milestone, creating a substantial player in the aircraft leasing market. Since its founding, AerCap has continually expanded its fleet through the acquisition of both new and used aircraft, capitalizing on growth trends in the global aviation industry.
Over the years, AerCap has acquired several significant companies to strengthen its competitive position, including the acquisition of International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) from AIG in 2014. This acquisition boosted AerCap’s scale and capabilities, allowing it to offer a more comprehensive range of services to its clients.
In recent years, AerCap has experienced notable developments in its business operations, particularly due to the COVID-19 pandemic which significantly impacted the aviation sector in 2020. Many airlines faced unprecedented financial challenges, leading to reduced demand for travel and aircraft leasing.
AerCap took proactive measures by restructuring leases and extending support to airlines in distress, showcasing its commitment to customer service and flexibility. The company’s diversified portfolio and global presence allowed it to weather the storm better than many competitors.
As the industry entered recovery mode in 2021 and 2022, AerCap was positioned to capitalize on the resurgence in air travel demand. The growth of the e-commerce sector and recovery in passenger traffic contributed to increased leasing activity. Furthermore, AerCap’s focus on sustainability and environmentally friendly aviation solutions has become a growing area of emphasis, as the aviation sector shifts towards greener technologies.
In 2022, AerCap announced an agreement with Boeing for the delivery of a significant number of new aircraft, demonstrating its commitment to modernizing its fleet and aligning with clients’ needs.
AerCap holds a strong market position, competing with other major players in the aerospace leasing sector such as GECAS (GE Capital Aviation Services), Avolon, and Air Lease Corporation. Its strategy focuses on building long-term relationships with clients, providing flexibility in lease terms, and investing in fleet diversification.
The company’s deep understanding of market dynamics and financial structuring enables it to tailor solutions that fit the evolving requirements of airlines. Additionally, AerCap’s financial strength and resources enable it to remain agile and responsive to emerging market trends.

7 years agoIt's clear that aercap put a lot of time and effort into their staff. The decor is very well designed, thought out. Everyone was cheery and the little things like fruit bowls available for all staff really showed through.
