I took a nasty fall in my apartment building. I couldn't get myself up. Gwen, Greg and Alex came to help me.
I have a lot of medical issues that make me weak and being obese doesn't help. I always fear the paramedics won't be able to lift me, but Greg and Alex lifted me up like I weighed 120lbs! And without further causing me pain.
Gwen was also really helpful and educated me on what the dangers are of a potential broken rib is and not getting a scan. But I just didn't feel like I was in enough pain or having trouble breathing to warrant them taking me to the hospital. They were respectful of my decision and didn't try to push me. Vitals were good too.
Gwen, Greg and Alex are the type of paramedics/EMTS that you hope you get if you find yourself in a bad position medically. Quick, attentive, professional and COMPASSIONATE!
This review is for a trip on 2/17/24 from Reno (Northern Nevada Medical Center - Sierra) to Las Vegas (Harmon Rehabilitation). The EMTs were Colby and Cheyenne.
I had been in ICU for weeks and the first hospital for 2 months. I was in no shape for NNMC-Sierra to send me on a 9 hour trip. I was experiencing severe pain and atrophy. The gurney I just don't think was appropriate for a bariatric (fat) patient for a 9 hour trip. It was hard and too small. At the same time I also understand that there is a price you sometimes have to pay being fat and that's the price of comfort.
But that meant the EMT had to pull over for safety while the other EMT was either moving me or adjusting pillows.
When we stopped so I could stretch and walk around I was unable to safely step down. So they had to get me in and out with the gurney and push me to the entrance of the gas stations because I was so exhausted and in pain I could barely walk.
This trip was really not easy on the two EMTs either. But not once did they show frustration or an unwillingness to help me through that nightmare. Both of them showed nothing but concern and compassion. I don't think I would have been able to cope if they had been anything less. They personified the professionalism and compassion you'd expect from EMTs.
I thankfully returned home on a plane, a 50 minute flight.
Edit to add: I was grateful when someone from Remsa reached out to me to gain further insight into my trip and why it was so painful and uncomfortable. Hopefully, in the future they can accommodate bariatric patients for extended trips more comfortably. I know that's not easy but it would lessen stress on both the patients and EMTs. So I'm glad they cared enough to call me.
I was not impressed. I was at a local business and a woman passed out. They asked if there was a nurse available. As a nurse practitioner, I responded. I assessed the woman and she was awake and talking. I went to my car and got my medical bag. She had passed out. She passed out a second time. I had her friends lower her gently to the floor. I took her vital signs. She woke up when she was placed on the floor. The EMTs from REMSA arrived as I was taking her BP again with my machine. I must say, I was shocked with how the two very young female EMTs spoke to me when I was trying to give them hand off communication! We know from healthcare research that that is dangerous. Hand off communication is important. I told them I was a nurse practitioner and tried to give them a hand-off. They didn't care. I guess they know more than God himself. A well known cardiologist in the area came in a few minutes later. He said he was treated the same way by REMSA EMTs a year ago. Well, guess what? I will never respond again in this area to any medical emergency. Since REMSA EMTs are the only ones who know anything, they can just be on their own. There is no excuse for treating licensed medical personnel who respond to emergencies the way the REMSA EMTs treat people. They need training in customer relations. I just pray that I never need to call them again, ever.
My husband, William, and I want to thank you for the outstanding service you provided to us very early last Sunday morning. It was fast, efficient and professional. At a time of great urgency, that is exactly what is needed. We are extremely grateful.
