Flew in here yesterday with my son. As a very young kid, I spent a lot of time here in the 80's when Dad had a plane tied down here. Also, took a balloon flight from here to Annapolis in the early 2000's. Back then, there must have been almost 100 planes including a few twins.
Wow, what a change to today with maybe a dozen single engine planes. I also found out yesterday that next year will likely be the end of this airport. It's the same thing killing many Maryland airports. Land value and houses. We already lost: Suburban airport in 2017, Hyde Field in 2022. At this rate Maryland isn’t going to have many airports, especially in higher density locations. I wish PG county would figure out a way to keep it an airport, and use it for police/fire training or some other such benefit to the county.
On a more positive note, I did spot one of my Dad’s old Mooneys on the ramp. Haven’t seen it in over 20yrs. Glad to see it’s still flying.
I love little Freeway and their instructors. They have a decent fleet of Cessna 152’s, 172’s, and the Arrow. Could they be better equipped? Sure. But you’re using it to train. It doesn’t need all the bells and whistles. The Arrow purrs like a kitten. Also- could it use an interior make-over and an avionics upgrade? Sure. But am I happy with the price and are the planes reliable and well-maintained? Yea.
The instructors are passionate and take your training as seriously. I have found each instructor I’ve flown and trained with to be knowledgeable and skilled and will get your through your ratings and certificates at a pace that’s comfortable for you, but I never found them to be a school that will nickel and dime.. or squeeze out additional time on the Hobbs. It’s also been nice seeing the same faces over the past 5 years I’ve flown from there. There isn’t too much turnover in regards to most schools now a days.
The airport itself is a fun challenge, given the location right on the edge of the FRZ( restricted flight zone around Washington, DC), and will keep you on your game, given shorter strip will keep. Not to mention that’s its fun to brag about from time to time. It will keep your Pilotage skills strong, as well.
All in all, it gets the job done. Check them out if you’re already a pilot and need a plane to rent or if you’re looking to start the journey of flight!
Great experience doing an aera intro flight here. The instructors are knowledgeable and easy going and the aircraft are well maintained. This is also one of the only airports you can rent aircraft once signed off by the instructors. Airport is tough to get to if you don't have a POV.
The maintenance shop did an excellent job. I now feel totally safe in an airplane that had several issues when they started the project. Thomas and Chris were fantastic to deal with, explaining each item in detail, and professionally fixing the issues on the airplane. Great airport and great people.
I got my husband an intro flight lesson (they have 30 and 60 minute options) for his birthday. Instructor was professional. Staff was friendly. We flew out towards Annapolis and my husband got to experiment with the controls and gain basic understanding of piloting. Very exciting and well worth it!
