I worked with Abel in 2 capacities:
(1) I used him as a BFR CFI several times. He is extremely thorough. He was more rigorous and experienced with testing emergency procedures then any other CFI in my 40 years as a pilot. These BFR's made me feel much safer and better prepared for the unknown.
(2) I was part of a partnership that leased a Cessna 172 to Hayward Flight for several years, until we sold the plane and dissolved the partnership. They treated our plane as if it was their own. It was always maintained in great condition, by the mechanics that Hayward flight uses for their other aircraft.
Hayward flight is an excellent organization in all regards.
As a student at Hayward Flight, I can say that my training has been very thorough and well structured. I started the flight program in December of 2023. Although this school starts the students with 6-8 hours of simulator training, it’s very useful to learn all the systems, maneuvers, and emergency procedures before the real thing. At 5 months into my training, going on average 2 days a week, I’m looking at DPE appointments for the next couple months. Shoutout to my instructor Matt for being an awesome teacher, and the other instructors and administrators for always being there to offer a helping hand
My girlfriend and I had an absolutely epic subset bay tour with an awesome pilot and everything was truly breathtaking. The staff was very accommodating and super nice to work with. By the end of the trip, I felt like I had know them for years. A+++
Hayward Flight is an excellent place to train to fly, especially if you are diligent, disciplined and willing to make the commitment.
I already had years of experience in my flight simulator at home and had read through the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge before I started training for private pilot license.
While I was searching for a flight school near my area, I found that Hayward flight was by far more responsive and professional than the alternatives.
Abel, my instructor, was very honest and candid in pointing out that flight schools will lose money if they accepted students like me who practice and study a lot at home.
He was at first a little skeptical about my fortitude (with good reasons too I assumed, probably having been disappointed by a few lackadaisical students in his career), but after a couple lessons he quickly realized he needn't worry.
He always thinks and advices in the interest of his students, for which I am grateful.
We made a great team and accomplished my first solo in 7.2 hours.
This was not because he made training easy for me. On the contrary, he kept setting challenging but realistic goals for me so that we were both very confident when we made the call to solo. At one point I couldn't tell if we were in turbulence or Abel was simulating it with his controls to improve my landing skills.
So if you're looking for quality training and want to make it effective by hard work, I certainly recommend Hayward Flight. They will be accommodating!
