Great place to fly out of - my pilot husband got his IFR certification here, and frequently rents planes here for short trips to Sonoma County, Monterey, or even just flights over to Concord!
I have completed only a few hours of flying time so far and yes it is true that you will need to sign up on a waiting list. I signed up in July 8, 2019 to start taking pilot lessons. I was told at that time would that it would take to Sep 2019 before my name would get to the top of list and start my pilot training. As it turned out my first flying lesson was on September 5, 2019. My instructor Christian Meng is just great.
This is definitely a place you don't want to miss, especially for UC Davis students. You can hardly have a flight school so close to your home in your later life, and provide such a cheap price at the same time. Demo flight is strongly recommended. If you want to learn to fly here, start early, they have a long waiting list. Foreigners should not apply TSA until CAFF tell it's time to apply, otherwise you waste your TSA time when you get it done but you are still in waiting list. Also, push your instructor to make your checkride appointment early, otherwise you will continue to practice for a long time and waste money.
I signed up on the waitlist 1 month ago and I was told the wait time would be 3 weeks to 2 months. I called again today and I was told I'd have to wait 2 to 3 months. That is very unprofessional I think. I have plans and schedules to adhere to. It is helpful to have an accurate time frame which should be expected from a professional agency. When I tried to ask the details for the delay I felt rushed off the phone and disregarded. Edit - I sent an email about it and received a call back with concern and helpful info.
Wish I would have read the reviews on their timelines that others have shared. Planes were down whenever I was able to get a booking. Do yourself a favor and pay $15 /hr more for an instructor and planes that are actually available. If you really need to save the money try and get Dylan.
